Medical Consultations

Information on free, confidential medical consultations for affected patients

Duke recognizes that some of our patients affected by the hydraulic fluid incident may continue to be concerned about their health. If you have such concerns, we recommend that you contact one of the physicians that Duke has made available. Dennis Darcey, MD, MSPH, and Carol Epling, MD, MSPH, who are nationally recognized experts in environmental medicine, are available at no cost to you to consult with you and your physician on this matter.

What happens during the consultation?

During the evaluation, patients are first asked to complete a routine screening questionnaire, after which they will be seen by Dr. Darcey or Dr. Epling. The physicians will review the questionnaire with you, and discuss your surgery, any post-surgical complications you have experienced, and any concerns you may have. They will also discuss with you the scientific reports related to the hydraulic fluid incident. They will also conduct a laboratory screening test and follow up with you about any abnormal results. If needed, they may recommend additional diagnostic or treatment options.

Will the consultation be confidential?

All medical records at Duke are handled with strict confidentiality. To reassure patients visiting the Occupational and Environmental Medicine clinic that they will receive a completely confidential consultation, Duke has also agreed to observe special restrictions on internal health system access to these medical records.

Dr. Darcey or Dr. Epling will follow up with your personal primary care physician to ensure that your overall care is well-coordinated.

Who are our specialists?

Dr. Darcey and Dr. Epling are both environmental medicine specialists within Duke’s Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Each has extensive experience assessing and addressing health effects of exposure to hazardous materials.
